Apex Audio System

What is it?

The Apex Audio System (AAS) is an extremely efficient GBA audio mixer and MOD player with sound effect support. Its main features are a low memory footprint and very high performance. It is designed to allow developers to easily make full use of the GBA's sound hardware with little overhead. It is many times faster than other mixers and was used in the development of the GBA version of Payback.

Key Features

Figures shown below are with the mixing buffer in EWRAM and the sample data in ROM. AAS also supports a "Dynamic Mixing" mode that automatically adjusts the mixing rate depending on the pitch of the samples being played.

Mixing rate : 8-32 KHz, optionally dynamic.
Number of channels : Up to 16.
Features (per channel) : Looping, pitch and volume control.
Mixing performance : ~0.8% CPU per active channel at 16 KHz. ~1% at 32 KHz.
MOD performance : Average ~2.7% CPU mixing a 4 channel MOD at 16 KHz. ~3.6% at 32 KHz. (Note that these figures include the mixing time mentioned above.)
Memory usage : ~3.2K IWRAM, ~3.3K EWRAM (includes code and all buffers)
