Payback

15 December 2002 | "The Comforting Glow Of A Flamethrower..."

The Windows and Linux versions of Payback are quickly moving towards completion. Work on both the software and hardware renderers is complete, including a full-scene antialiasing option for those of you with newer 3D accelerators, and support for high resolutions in hardware mode. Feel free to check out the screenshots on this page to get a taste of some of the high-paced gameplay that Payback offers.

The port itself has been fairly straightforward. A unique challenge I faced was hand-converting much of the highly optimized low-level source code for the software renderer into a format which both Windows and Linux can understand. This process was long and involved, but the end result proved to be worth the effort. The software renderer is stable and quick, providing users with low end systems the ability to experience Payback's immersive gameplay.

Payback's hardware acceleration provides even faster rendering and higher visual quality. From the flashes of light as a car explodes, to the comforting glow of the flamethrower, once you've played Payback with a 3D card, you'll never want to play it any other way.

The remainder of the development time will be spent on polishing the ports and implementing even more exciting features, such as LAN play. Expect Payback to be available for Windows and Linux in early 2003!
