| Destination Software demonstrated the GBA version of Payback at E3 and the response was very positive. GameSpot wrote this preview and the game was also a finalist in their "Best of E3 2004" awards in two categories: Biggest Surprise and Best Game Boy Advance Game. The game was also the runner-up in the Best Game Boy Advance Action Game category of IGN's Best of E3 2004 awards.
